Miuccia Prada

Miuccia Prada is an influential Italian fashion designer and businesswoman, renowned for transforming her family's leather goods company into a global fashion powerhouse. She is the co-chief executive and head designer of Prada, as well as the founder of its subsidiary brand, Miu Miu.

Raised in an affluent Milanese family, Prada was heiress to the luxury brand Fratelli Prada, founded by her grandfather. In 1978, she took the helm of Prada, which at the time was a modest leather goods business with a single store. She partnered with Patrizio Bertelli, a leather goods manufacturer she met at a trade fair, who later became her husband. Together, they revitalized the brand, introducing innovative designs and expanding its global presence.

Prada's first major success came in 1985 with a line of black nylon handbags, which combined practicality with luxury. She launched the company's first women's ready-to-wear collection in 1989, characterized by minimalist designs and muted colors. In 1992, she introduced Miu Miu, a more affordable line inspired by her personal wardrobe.

Prada is known for her intellectual approach to fashion, often challenging conventional aesthetics. Her designs frequently explore themes of "ugly chic," blending traditional styles with modern influences.

Beyond fashion, Prada has made significant contributions to the arts through the Fondazione Prada. The foundation is dedicated to contemporary art and culture, hosting exhibitions, film screenings, and architectural projects. Its main venue in Milan, designed by architect Rem Koolhaas, opened in 2015 and has become a prominent cultural institution.

In 2020, Prada began co-creative directorship of Prada with Belgian designer Raf Simons, marking a new era of collaboration for the brand. Under her leadership, Prada also acquired Versace in 2025, further expanding the company's influence in the fashion industry. She was named to TIME magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2025 list.
