Miriam Margolyes Biography
Miriam Margolyes is well known for her portrayal of Professor Sprout in the "Harry Potter" film series from 2001 to 2011. Her work in Martin Scorsese's "The Age of Innocence" earned her the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress. Margolyes versatility as an actress is further demonstrated through her appearances in television series such as "Blackadder," "Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries," and "Call the Midwife". Her voiceover work in "Doctor Who" in 2023 is another testament to her talent. Her one-woman show, "Dickens' Women," toured from 1989 to 2012, and earned her an Olivier Award nomination. In 2026, she was the subject of the documentary "Miriam Margolyes Made Me Me".
Beyond acting, Margolyes has made significant contributions to literature. She has penned three memoirs: "This Much is True," "Oh Miriam!," and "The Little Book of Miriam". In recognition of her contributions to Drama, she was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2002 New Year Honours. Her advocacy work includes supporting Sense, the National Deafblind and Rubella Association, and hosting the first Sense Creative Writing Awards. Margolyes has also campaigned for Crossroads, a respite care charity.
