Minda Dentler

Minda Dentler is an athlete, motivational speaker, global health advocate, and author recognized for her achievements in disability sports and polio advocacy. Paralyzed as an infant in India after contracting polio, Dentler was placed in an orphanage before being adopted by an American family and relocating to Washington. She underwent surgeries that enabled her to walk with leg braces and crutches. Dentler earned an MBA from Baruch College and a BA in information systems from the University of Washington, establishing a professional career while also pursuing adaptive athletics.

Dentler began handcycling, a form of cycling powered by the arms, at age 28 and later transitioned to triathlon. She won two USA National Triathlon titles and completed an Ironman distance triathlon. On her second attempt, Dentler became the first woman handcyclist to complete the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, which included a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile handcycle ride, and a 26.2-mile wheelchair push. She finished the event after more than 14 hours of competition.

This achievement led to an ESPN ESPY Award nomination and established Dentler as a prominent advocate in the global effort to eradicate polio. She has delivered a TED Talk and shared her story on CNN, CBS Mornings, Forbes, and Glamour. As an Aspen Institute Fellow, Dentler has contributed to Huffington Post and TIME, focusing on disability inclusion and public health. Her speaking engagements highlight her experiences as a polio survivor and athlete, addressing topics such as resilience, perseverance, and disability awareness.

Dentler is the author of the children's book, "The Girl Who Figured It Out," which recounts her journey from an orphan with polio in India to becoming the first female wheelchair athlete to complete the Ironman World Championship triathlon in Hawaii. The book received the Texas Bluebonnet Award and has been recognized by leading literary publications. Through her work in sports, public speaking, and writing, Dentler challenges perceptions of disability and advocates for inclusion and health equity.
