Mike Schroepfer

Mike Schroepfer is an American technology leader, entrepreneur, climate investor, and philanthropist best known for his role as Chief Technology Officer at Facebook, now Meta Platforms, where he oversaw engineering, research, and strategic technology initiatives during a pivotal period of growth and innovation. A graduate of Stanford University with both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in computer science, Schroepfer began his career in technology with early engineering roles before founding the software company CenterRun, which was acquired by Sun Microsystems. At Sun he served as Chief Technology Officer of the data center automation division, and later as Vice President of Engineering at Mozilla Corporation, where he helped lead the development of the Firefox web browser. In 2008, he joined Facebook as director of engineering and was named CTO in 2013, reporting directly to company leadership and shaping its approach to artificial intelligence, infrastructure, and emerging technologies.

After 13 years with Facebook and Meta Platforms, Schroepfer stepped down from the CTO position in 2022 and transitioned into a part‑time role as Senior Fellow, focusing on recruiting technical talent and advancing artificial intelligence efforts. This shift allowed him to pursue broader interests outside the company and deepen his involvement in philanthropic and climate initiatives.

Following his transition from Meta, Schroepfer launched Gigascale Capital, a climate venture capital firm dedicated to backing early‑stage companies developing technologies to address the climate crisis. In tandem with his climate investment work, he co‑founded and leads Additional Ventures, a purpose‑driven organization that funds research and innovation in areas including climate action, biomedical science, and community development. He also serves as board chair of the Carbon to Sea Initiative, a nonprofit focused on ocean‑based carbon removal.

Schroepfer’s career reflects a unique blend of technology leadership and mission‑driven investment, with his work spanning global platforms, advanced research, and efforts to address some of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century.
