Mike Horn

Mike Horn is a South African-born Swiss professional explorer and adventurer known for extreme, unassisted expeditions across challenging terrains, including solo circumnavigations of the equator and Arctic Circle, as well as pioneering polar crossings. Horn holds a degree in human movement science from Stellenbosch University, grounding his observations in performance physiology and behavioral science. After studying at Stellenbosch, he moved to Europe, where he worked as a ski instructor and river and canyoning guide, laying the foundation for a career in endurance exploration.

Horn's first major achievement was a solo traverse of South America, traveling on foot from the Pacific Ocean to the source of the Amazon River in the Peruvian Andes, then descending the 7,000-kilometer river on a hydrospeed to the Atlantic Ocean. He gained international recognition after completing a one-year, six-month solo journey around the equator without motorized transport, a feat that earned him the Laureus World Sports Award for Alternative Sportsperson of the Year. This journey, which involved sailing three oceans and extensive pedaling, paddling, and hiking, is chronicled in his book "Latitude Zero." Horn followed this with the "Arktos" expedition, a solo, non-motorized circumnavigation of the Arctic Circle, making him the first person to complete the 20,000-kilometer route non-stop, enduring two Arctic winters with temperatures as low as minus 60 degrees Celsius. He documented this journey in his book "Conquering the Impossible."

Horn continued to achieve world-firsts, including a 60-day ski voyage without dogs or motorized transport during the Arctic night with Norwegian explorer Børge Ousland, traveling from Cape Artichesky in Russia to the North Pole. He has also crossed Antarctica alone in 57 days as part of the "Pole2Pole" project, a circumnavigation of the world via the two poles. Horn has circled the world twice—once on the equator and once on the Arctic Circle—walked to the North Pole in winter darkness, sailed around the planet for four years, and scaled four of the world's 8,000-meter mountains.

In addition to his solo expeditions, Horn launched the Young Explorers Program, inviting young adults from around the world to explore continents and oceans aboard his expedition sailing vessel Pangaea. Nearly 100 young explorers joined him at 12 global hotspots to implement ecological and social projects. Horn also devised the Pangaea Expedition, a 35-meter environmentally friendly ocean-going yacht that completed a four-year trans-navigation of the globe by sea and land. His television work includes the M6 show "Cap Horn," where celebrities joined him on segments of the "Pole2Pole" expedition, and the documentary series "Mike Horn: Survivre à l'impossible," which highlighted remote locations and promoted nature conservation.

As a motivational speaker and performance advisor, Horn shares insights on leadership, mental resilience, and determination, drawing from decades of experience in extreme environments. His work with elite teams includes performance sessions with the Indian Cricket Team ahead of their Cricket World Cup win. Horn continues to explore, providing audiences with perspectives grounded in ongoing field experience and practical techniques for overcoming adversity.
