Mike Hampton

Mike Hampton is a former Major League Baseball pitcher whose career spanned nearly two decades. Hampton played in Major League Baseball as a pitcher, suiting up for the Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros, New York Mets, Colorado Rockies, Atlanta Braves, and Arizona Diamondbacks. He was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the sixth round of the MLB June Amateur Draft. After being traded to Houston, Hampton developed into a leading left-handed starter. Throughout the 1990s, he was a consistent presence in the Houston Astros' starting rotation, accumulating more than 1,000 regular season innings and reaching his peak in his final year with the club.

Hampton's standout season with the Astros included leading the National League with 22 wins and posting a 2.90 ERA over 239 innings. He earned his first All-Star selection, the Astros Pitcher of the Year award, and a Silver Slugger Award as the top-hitting pitcher. He finished second in NL Cy Young voting. After being traded to the Mets, Hampton excelled in the postseason, winning the National League Championship Series Most Valuable Player Award with a 2-0 record and 0.00 ERA across three starts, helping New York reach the World Series. His performance led to an eight-year, $121 million contract with the Rockies, which was the largest in MLB history at the time and the highest ever for a pitcher.

Hampton was recognized as one of the most accomplished hitting pitchers, holding the record for most Silver Slugger awards for a pitcher, with five. His seven home runs in one season were the most by any pitcher during a Silver Slugger Award-winning season, and his five consecutive awards set a record for pitchers. He was also the only National League pitcher other than Greg Maddux to win a Gold Glove during Maddux's career from 1989 onward. Hampton's career included challenges, such as undergoing Tommy John surgery, which sidelined him for two seasons, and rotator cuff surgery, which cost him another full year. Despite these setbacks, he continued competing at the major league level through the end of his career.

After his playing career, Hampton transitioned into coaching, beginning in the Los Angeles Angels' minor league system. He served as pitching coach for the Arkansas Travelers, the Angels' Double-A affiliate, and later joined the Seattle Mariners' major league coaching staff as bullpen coach. During his tenure, the Mariners bullpen improved significantly in ERA rankings. Hampton's coaching career draws on his extensive experience as a former All-Star pitcher and his understanding of both the challenges and successes in professional baseball.
