Michael Steinberger is an American journalist and author known for his work at the intersection of culture, politics and technology. He is a longtime contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine, and his reporting and commentary have appeared in Slate, the Financial Times, The Economist, Food & Wine, Wine Spectator and other publications.
Before becoming a full-time journalist, Steinberger worked on Wall Street. He later gained recognition as a leading wine writer, serving as Slate’s wine columnist for nearly a decade.
In his book "The Philosopher in the Valley: Alex Karp, Palantir, and the Rise of the Surveillance State," Steinberger examines the ascent of Palantir and its enigmatic CEO, Alex Karp. Drawing on years of reporting, he explores the philosophical influences that shaped Karp and the ethical questions surrounding Palantir’s expanding role in government and national security.
