Michael Soenen

Michael Soenen is a filmmaker and business leader known for his approach to storytelling and social impact. As the creator and lead producer of "Nothing to See Here: Watts," Soenen developed a community-driven documentary that provides an unfiltered perspective on life in Watts, California. By equipping residents—including students, former gang members, police officers, and activists—with cameras, he facilitated dialogue and collaboration, leading to a peace pledge and a reduction in homicides. The film premiered at the Resnick Aspen Action Forum, where it was recognized for its methodology and its role in fostering change within the community.

Before his work in filmmaking, Soenen built a career in venture capital, healthcare, and retail, serving in executive roles at companies such as FIGS, Benchmark Analytics, Fooda, and Manduka. He also held leadership positions at FTD Group, where he guided the company through growth and public offerings, and was a partner at Valor Equity Partners, overseeing operations and investment strategy. His expertise in organizational leadership and strategic execution has been acknowledged across multiple industries, and he has served on the boards of several companies.

Soenen’s commitment to leadership and social innovation is reflected by his selection as a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute.
