Michael McDowell

Michael McDowell is an American professional stock car racing driver known for his career in NASCAR and motorsports. During his karting career, McDowell collected 18 consecutive feature race wins, a World Karting Association Championship, and back-to-back International Kart Federation Championships. Transitioning from go-karts to larger open-wheel cars, he won the Formula Renault USA Championship in his inaugural season and made his Star Mazda Series debut the following year, earning two wins, three poles, and Rookie of the Year honors.

From 2005 to 2007, McDowell competed in the Grand-Am Cup Series, earning one win and multiple podiums. He became the first driver since Mario Andretti to compete in both an open-wheel and a sports car race in the same race weekend.

McDowell moved to stock car racing to compete full-time in the ARCA Menards Series, finishing runner-up in the overall championship points standings in his rookie season with four wins, nine poles, and Rookie of the Year honors. He was selected by Michael Waltrip Racing to compete full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series. That debut season included a significant crash during qualifying at Texas Motor Speedway, where his No. 00 Toyota crashed into the outside wall and rolled multiple times before he exited the vehicle uninjured.

After his tenure at Michael Waltrip Racing, much of McDowell's Cup career involved racing with smaller teams, often as a start-and-park driver. He earned his first career top-10 finish in the Cup Series with a ninth-place result in the Daytona 500 while driving for Phil Parsons Racing. McDowell also won his first Xfinity Series race at Road America with Richard Childress Racing. His performance continued to improve at the premier level, earning his first top five in the Cup Series in the Daytona summer race and completing the most laps of any driver during one season.

In his 358th career start, McDowell secured his first Cup Series win in the Daytona 500, a victory recognized as a significant underdog achievement in NASCAR. He later dominated the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, leading 54 of 82 laps and earning a win that secured a playoff berth. During his time with Front Row Motorsports, McDowell and the No. 34 team won the Daytona 500, the Brickyard 200, made two NASCAR Cup Series Playoff appearances, and earned six poles.

McDowell continued his NASCAR Cup Series career by joining Spire Motorsports as the full-time driver of the No. 71 Chevrolet Camaro. His best finish in that season was fourth place at Sonoma, and he has consistently demonstrated strong road-course racing skills, with his top finishes coming on road courses. With 537 career Cup starts and two wins—the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis Road Course—McDowell has earned 14 career top-five finishes, split evenly between drafting-style tracks and road or street courses, highlighting his versatility in stock car racing.
