Michael J. Abramowitz is a journalist, democracy advocate, and human rights leader whose career spans more than three decades in journalism, public education, and international advocacy. Abramowitz spent the first 24 years of his career at The Washington Post, where he served as national editor and later as White House correspondent. At The Washington Post, he received the Aldo Beckman Award for excellence in White House coverage and led a team that won the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting on the post-9/11 war on terrorism.
Following his journalism career, Abramowitz transitioned to human rights and public education. Before joining Freedom House, he was director of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum's Levine Institute for Holocaust Education, where he led genocide prevention efforts and oversaw public education programs through exhibitions, training, and digital outreach. This work expanded his expertise in confronting authoritarianism and defending human rights globally.
Abramowitz served as president of Freedom House, a non-partisan organization dedicated to supporting democracy. In this role, he oversaw analysis, advocacy, and direct support to frontline defenders of freedom, particularly in closed authoritarian societies. During his tenure, Abramowitz launched initiatives such as "Free Them All: The Fred Hiatt Program to Free Political Prisoners" and expanded research and programming to address transnational repression. He also oversaw the growth of the technology and democracy portfolio, addressing threats to human rights online, and raised the profile of the organization's flagship reports, "Freedom in the World" and "Freedom on the Net."
Abramowitz was sworn in as the 31st director of Voice of America. As director, he oversaw 48 language services reaching approximately 354 million people weekly through independent TV, radio, and digital media. When the organization faced political pressure, Abramowitz filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to restore Voice of America. After litigation, a federal judge ruled that the attempt to bring Voice of America and USAGM to the statutory minimum was unlawful, reinstating broadcasting operations and returning employees on administrative leave to work.
A graduate of Harvard College, Abramowitz is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the George W. Bush Institute Advisory Council. He was formerly a Marshall Memorial Fellow at the German Marshall Fund and a Berlin Prize Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin. Abramowitz's career, which blends journalism, genocide prevention, democracy promotion, and press freedom advocacy, positions him as a leading voice on the global challenges facing democratic institutions.
