Michael A. Taylor is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) center fielder whose 12-season career was defined by defensive excellence, postseason performance, and a steady presence in the clubhouse. Selected by the Washington Nationals in the sixth round of the MLB Draft, Taylor made his MLB debut with the Nationals after transitioning from shortstop to center fielder due to a hand injury that limited his infield development. He advanced through Washington's farm system and was ranked among the organization's top prospects by MLB Pipeline and Baseball America.
Taylor made an immediate impact in the major leagues, hitting a go-ahead grand slam in his first career at-bat with the bases loaded. His 2017 season stood out as he hit an inside-the-park grand slam, the first in Major League Baseball in more than two years, and delivered a grand slam in Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the Chicago Cubs. Taylor became the first MLB player to record four or more RBIs in back-to-back playoff games. He was part of the Nationals team that won the World Series against the Houston Astros, hitting a solo home run in his first World Series at-bat.
Recognized for his defensive skills, Taylor won a Gold Glove Award and Fielding Bible Award with the Kansas City Royals. He became the first Royals center fielder to earn the honor since Willie Wilson, led all center fielders with 11 outfield assists, and recorded 19 defensive runs saved, ranking second among all players at any position. Over his career, Taylor accumulated 85 defensive runs saved, 66 outs above average, and 50 outfield assists, with a strong arm that regularly registered throws around 90 miles per hour.
Taylor appeared in 1,216 games, compiling a .232 batting average, 807 hits, 109 home runs, 388 runs batted in, and 128 stolen bases. He played for the Washington Nationals, Kansas City Royals, Minnesota Twins, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Chicago White Sox. During his season with Minnesota, Taylor hit a career-high 21 home runs and was the team's only player with at least 10 stolen bases and 20 home runs. He received the Heart and Hustle Award for his dedication and sportsmanship, capping a career built on professionalism and commitment. Taylor announced his retirement prior to the season finale, having decided months earlier that it would be his last season.
