Mehdi Ordikhani-Seyedlar

Mehdi Ordikhani-Seyedlar is a biomedical engineer, computational neuroscientist, and data scientist whose work focuses on the intersection of brain science and machine learning. He earned a doctorate in biomedical engineering from the Technical University of Denmark, where his thesis addressed decoding electrophysiological features of covert and overt attention in humans. Ordikhani-Seyedlar has conducted research on various brain functions, including learning, memory, pain, and visual attention in humans. He has also contributed to neuroscience research on primates in Dr. Miguel Nicolelis' laboratory at Duke University.

After completing his doctorate, Ordikhani-Seyedlar was offered a postdoctoral position at Duke University to develop algorithms for processing large-scale neuronal activity and brain-machine interfaces. Due to political complications as an Iranian citizen, he continued his brain research outside the United States. He later became a machine learning engineer, applying data mining techniques to large-scale data and leading projects in analytical domains. His expertise includes biosignals for controlling external devices and automated data and image processing in real time for automotive applications.

Ordikhani-Seyedlar's research has contributed to the treatment of neurological conditions. His work is based on the understanding that attention involves both focusing and filtering information, and by investigating brain patterns during attention tasks, he has developed computer models aimed at treating ADHD and assisting individuals who have lost the ability to communicate. Attention-based brain-computer interfaces, which use electroencephalograms or other recording techniques to generate neurofeedback, are among the technologies he has advanced. His peer-reviewed research, including publications in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, has furthered the understanding of neurofeedback therapy for enhancing visual attention.

Ordikhani-Seyedlar is recognized for his expertise in neuro-engineering of human attention and has developed human-to-machine interface systems to evaluate and improve attention. He has also expanded his work into the business sector, focusing on the attention economy. With experience in artificial intelligence and machine learning, he advises startups and emerging professionals on leveraging brain science for business growth. His TED Talk, "What Happens in Your Brain When You Pay Attention?," was featured in Business Insider and introduced his neuroscience research to a global audience.
