Meghan Duggan is recognized as one of the most accomplished athletes in U.S. women's ice hockey. Over a 14-year career with Team USA, Duggan competed in three Olympic Games and earned three Olympic medals, including captaining the team to its first Olympic gold in two decades. She played for the U.S. National Team in eight International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championships, securing seven consecutive gold medals. Duggan is the only U.S. hockey captain, male or female, to lead teams on 10 different occasions.
Before her international career, Duggan was a standout forward at the University of Wisconsin, where she helped the Badgers win three NCAA National Titles. She graduated as the leading scorer in Wisconsin's history, with 238 points on 108 goals and 130 assists in 159 career games. After her senior season, Duggan received the Patty Kazmaier Award, presented annually to the top women's ice hockey player in the NCAA, and USA Hockey's Bob Allen Women's Player of the Year Award. She was later inducted into the University of Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame.
Duggan is also known for her advocacy for gender equity in sports. She led a successful strike by the U.S. Women's National Team to achieve gender-equitable treatment in advance of the World Championship, which resulted in the team receiving the Women's Sports Foundation's Wilma Rudolph Courage Award and being honored as ESPN's Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year. The team's gold-medal victory at the Winter Olympics also earned an ESPYS Award for Best Game. Off the ice, Duggan joined the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association in efforts to create a sustainable professional hockey league, now known as the Professional Women's Hockey League.
Following her retirement from playing, Duggan became an executive in professional hockey. She served as director of player development for the New Jersey Devils, one of the few women in hockey operations roles in the National Hockey League. Duggan was named the first general manager of the expansion Hamilton team in the Professional Women's Hockey League. She has also served on the USA Hockey Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and Women's Advisory Committee, and was part of the inaugural group named to the NHL Player Inclusion Committee. Duggan completed a two-year tenure as president of the Women's Sports Foundation, an organization founded to promote female involvement in sports.
Duggan's influence extends beyond the rink. She delivered the keynote address at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's commencement ceremony at Camp Randall Stadium. Duggan is a keynote speaker on topics including gender equality, women's empowerment, resilience, leadership, LGBTQ+ advocacy, teamwork, diversity and inclusion, and performance under pressure. Her journey from aspiring Olympian to champion and advocate has contributed to the ongoing evolution of women's hockey and sports leadership.
