Max Levchin

Max Levchin is a Ukrainian-American software engineer and entrepreneur recognized for his influence in the financial technology sector. In 1998, Levchin and Peter Thiel founded Fieldlink, a security company focused on encrypted data storage for PDA devices as digital wallets. The company, later renamed Confinity, developed the payment product PayPal, which specialized in digital funds transfer. PayPal merged with X.com, adopted its current name, went public, and was subsequently acquired by eBay. Levchin played a significant role in PayPal's initial public offering and its acquisition by eBay for $1.5 billion. He is also known for his work on PayPal's anti-fraud systems and as the co-creator of the Gausebeck-Levchin test, an early commercial CAPTCHA implementation.

Levchin is part of the group known as the PayPal Mafia, a cohort of founders and former employees who have gone on to shape the technology and venture capital industries. After the eBay acquisition, Levchin founded Slide, a media-sharing service for social networking platforms such as Myspace and Facebook, which was later sold to Google. He then launched HVF, a company focused on leveraging data for innovative projects. Affirm, a financial technology company spun out of HVF, was established to build a next-generation credit network. HVF also launched Glow, a fertility app designed to assist couples in conceiving naturally.

Levchin serves as founder, chairman of the board, and chief executive officer of Affirm Holdings, Inc., which operates a payment network utilizing proprietary technology, advanced risk modeling, and a focus on transparency and responsible finance. Affirm provides consumers with flexible, transaction-level priced credit and transparent financing options without late fees or hidden charges, establishing itself as a leader in the buy now, pay later industry. The company has reported significant growth in gross merchandise volume and revenue. Levchin is a frequent commentator on the state of the American consumer and the future of fintech, appearing on programs such as CNBC's "Squawk Box" and "Mad Money."

Levchin has been recognized in the Technology Review TR100 as one of the top 100 innovators and as Innovator of the Year.
