Matthew Schaefer is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman for the New York Islanders. Selected first overall in the Ontario Hockey League Draft by the Erie Otters, he became the third first-overall pick in Otters history, following Ryan O'Reilly and Connor McDavid. Schaefer earned a spot on the OHL All-Rookie First Team and captained Team Canada White to gold at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge before adding another gold with Canada's Under-18 team. He also served as the Canadian captain at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, where his performance contributed to Canada claiming the gold medal, including opening the tournament with two goals in a 10-0 victory against Switzerland.
Schaefer's path to the NHL included overcoming significant personal challenges, as both his mother and his billet mother died during his OHL rookie season. He was selected to represent Canada at the World Junior Championship but suffered a broken collarbone in a round-robin game, ending his tournament and OHL season. Despite missing the remainder of the season, Schaefer received the CHL Top Draft Prospect Award, having recorded seven goals and 15 assists in 17 games played.
As the No. 1 overall selection in the NHL Draft, Schaefer became the sixth player in Islanders history to win the Calder Trophy and the first since Mathew Barzal. In his debut NHL season, he tied Brian Leetch's NHL record for goals by a rookie defenseman with 23, and his 36 assists and 59 points set a new record for an 18-year-old defenseman, surpassing Phil Housley's previous mark. Schaefer became the youngest defenseman in NHL history to register a point in his league debut, the youngest player at any position to score an overtime goal, and the first defenseman in more than 90 years to lead rookies in goals.
Schaefer won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's rookie of the year, becoming the first unanimous choice for the award in more than three decades. At 18 years and 223 days on the final day of the regular season, he is the youngest Calder Trophy winner in NHL history, one day younger than Nathan MacKinnon. He was surprised with the trophy during an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America." It is uncommon for a teenage defenseman to make an immediate impact in the NHL, as the position typically requires a longer development period.
Beyond his on-ice achievements, Schaefer has demonstrated resilience in the face of personal loss. He dedicated his Calder win to his late mother, Jennifer, who died of breast cancer. With support from the Islanders Children's Foundation, Schaefer partnered with Northwell Health to open the Jennifer Schaefer Child Support Center at Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York, in her honor. Schaefer has established himself as a central figure for the New York Islanders and as a prominent young player in professional hockey.
