Matthew Oppenheimer

Matthew Oppenheimer is the co-founder and CEO of Remitly, a digital financial services company specializing in cross-border money transfers. Under Oppenheimer's leadership, Remitly has become the largest independent digital money transmitter in the United States, serving millions of customers in more than 170 countries. The company is recognized for its mobile-first approach, offering international remittance services that emphasize speed, reliability, and transparency. Remitly's expansion to over 5,100 corridors and product offerings such as Passbook, a digital financial tool designed for immigrants, reflect Oppenheimer's focus on providing accessible financial solutions for immigrants and their families.

Before founding Remitly, Oppenheimer worked in the banking sector at Barclays Bank in London and Nairobi, Kenya, where he led mobile and internet banking initiatives. His experiences in Nairobi highlighted the challenges immigrants face when sending money internationally, which inspired the creation of Remitly. Oppenheimer also served as an entrepreneur in residence at Highway 12 Ventures, where he began developing Remitly before relocating the company to Seattle to participate in the TechStars accelerator program. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Dartmouth College and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School.

Oppenheimer has received several industry recognitions, including the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the Pacific Northwest, Puget Sound Business Journal 40 Under 40, and GeekWire's Big Tech CEO of the Year. He serves on the board of directors for BECU and is a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute.
