Matt Krupnick

Matt Krupnick is an investigative journalist with more than two decades of experience covering the intersections of education, inequity, and public policy. Krupnick has written about higher education since 2004, focusing on topics such as college affordability, financial aid barriers, criminal justice reform, and housing inequality. He has worked as a full-time professional journalist for more than 15 years, much of that time at newspapers in California, before transitioning to freelance work with national and international reach.

Krupnick specializes in education reporting, investigative journalism, data journalism, and environmental issues. His work has appeared in ProPublica, The New York Times, The Guardian, The Washington Post, and Hechinger Report, among other outlets. He has also produced the "Future U" podcast, expanding his presence in audio journalism and demonstrating versatility across multiple platforms.

Krupnick's investigative projects often examine accountability in powerful institutions. Notably, his series for ProPublica explored the chronic underfunding of tribal colleges, highlighting the consequences of a significant annual shortfall in federal funding for Indigenous higher education. He received an EWA Reporting Fellowship from the Education Writers Association in support of this investigation. Krupnick also contributed as a reporter to the Center for Public Integrity's State Integrity Investigation.

Krupnick was named best beat reporter by the Education Writers Association and completed a certificate in data visualization from the UC Berkeley Advanced Media Institute. He has reported regularly from Mexico while living in Oaxaca and serves as a board member with the Chicago Headline Club, the nation's largest chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. As a member of Investigative Reporters and Editors and the Education Writers Association, Krupnick brings extensive on-the-ground reporting experience, data analysis skills, and institutional knowledge to his coverage of American education and public policy.
