Matt Freese

Matt Freese is a professional soccer goalkeeper known for his progression from a homegrown academy product to a starting goalkeeper in Major League Soccer and for the United States Men's National Team. Freese began his youth career at the Philadelphia Union Academy before playing two seasons at Harvard University, where he earned Second Team All-Ivy honors as a sophomore and studied economics and computer science.

Freese signed with Philadelphia Union as a Homegrown player, backing up three-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Andre Blake before being traded to New York City FC. During his tenure with Philadelphia, he recorded a shutout on Decision Day against New England Revolution, contributing to the Union's Supporters' Shield win. At New York City FC, Freese established himself as a reliable goalkeeper, recording 330 saves and 25 clean sheets across 101 starts. He was recognized as the club's MVP. Freese is noted for his shot-stopping abilities both inside and outside the box and his comfort playing with the ball at his feet, often acting as a sweeper behind a high defensive line.

Freese transitioned to the international stage with the United States Men's National Team, making 13 starts, including every match at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. In the Gold Cup quarterfinals against Costa Rica, he saved three penalties in a shootout, becoming the second USMNT goalkeeper to achieve this milestone after Tony Meola. Freese was named Man of the Match for his performance. His play drew praise from figures within the soccer community for his composure and effectiveness in high-pressure situations.

Freese was selected for the United States Men's National Team roster at the FIFA World Cup, starting in the opening group stage match against Paraguay, which the United States won 4-1. Off the field, Freese serves on the U.S. Soccer Federation's Athletes Council and the USSF board of directors. He is also involved with South Bronx United, contributing to fundraising, mentoring, and supporting programs that use soccer as a platform for youth development, workforce training, and immigration legal services.
