Mary Pierce

Mary Caroline Pierce is a retired tennis professional who represented France internationally in team competitions and the Olympics. She was born in Canada to an American father and a French mother, and holds citizenship of all three countries.

Pierce won four Grand Slam titles: two in singles, one in doubles and one in mixed doubles. She reached six Grand Slam singles finals. Her Grand Slam singles titles came at the 1995 Australian Open and the 2000 French Open; Pierce is the last French player, male or female, to win the latter title. She won the doubles event at the 2000 French Open with Martina Hingis as her partner, and reached an additional Grand Slam women's doubles final at the 2000 Australian Open, also partnering Hingis. She also won the mixed doubles event at the 2005 Wimbledon Championships, partnering with Mahesh Bhupathi. Pierce won 18 WTA singles titles and 10 WTA doubles titles, including five Tier I singles events. She also twice reached the final of the season-ending WTA Tour Championships, most recently in 2005.

Mary is part of the very closed circle of tennis players who can count more than 500 wins. Her incredible career propelled her to the top of the world tennis scene, until, on the 26th of October 2006 in Linz, Austria, she suffered a terrible knee injury which ended her career.

Her steadfast faith in Jesus has enabled her to continue, despite this ordeal. To date, Mary has remained firmly entrenched and active in the tennis world; coaching, commentating and even organizing professional tournaments.

In 2019, tennis great Mary Pierce was elected to receive tennis’ ultimate honor in 2019 – induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
