Martin Chavez

Martin Chavez, Ph.D., is a computer scientist, investment banker, and entrepreneur recognized for his contributions to the integration of technology and finance. Chavez holds an A.B. in biochemical sciences and an S.M. in computer science from Harvard, as well as a Ph.D. in medical information sciences from Stanford. His career bridges Silicon Valley and Wall Street, combining scientific training with financial expertise.

Chavez began his career in technology, serving as CEO and co-founder of Kiodex, later acquired by Sungard, and as chief technology officer and co-founder of Quorum Software Systems. He joined Goldman Sachs in the J. Aron Currency and Commodities Division as a senior energy strategist before moving to Credit Suisse Financial Products as global head of energy derivatives. Chavez later returned to Goldman Sachs, where he held roles including managing director in IBD Strats, global co-head of Securities Division Strats, and global co-chief operating officer of the Equities Franchise. He was among the first developers of SecDB, a platform that contributed to the transformation of trading through software and data science.

At Goldman Sachs, Chavez served in senior leadership positions, including chief information officer, overseeing the firm's engineering team; chief financial officer; and global co-head of the Securities Division. He was a member of the Management Committee, Firmwide Capital Committee, Firmwide Risk Committee, and Steering Committee on Regulatory Reform. Chavez was named partner during his tenure and played a key role in advancing the use of technology and data science in investment banking.

Chavez is a partner and vice chairman of Sixth Street, where he focuses on research and development, diversity, equity, and inclusion, sourcing, and portfolio engagement. He serves on the board of directors of Alphabet Inc., the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, the Stanford Medicine Board of Fellows, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Chavez previously served on the Board of Overseers of Harvard University, including as president.

In addition to his work in finance and technology, Chavez is active in the life sciences sector, particularly in the application of artificial intelligence and software to drug discovery and digital biology. He chairs the board of directors of Recursion Pharmaceuticals, a company focused on industrializing drug discovery through cloud-based machine learning. Chavez has advised and served on the boards of multiple startups and projects in biotechnology and artificial intelligence. He has appeared on Bloomberg Open Interest to discuss developments in AI and finance. Chavez's experience spans computer science, Wall Street leadership, and biotechnology, positioning him as a knowledgeable speaker on the intersection of technology, finance, and life sciences.
