Marqise Lee

Marqise Lee is a former NFL wide receiver known for his journey from a challenging upbringing to a career in college and professional football. Lee experienced a turbulent childhood, moving between his mother and grandparents in low-income homes and spending time in foster care. His two older brothers were involved in gangs, with one losing his life to gang violence and the other incarcerated. Lee initially considered following a similar path but was deterred by his brothers. During high school, the Hester family welcomed Lee into their home, enabling him to attend Junípero Serra High School in Gardena, California, where his athletic abilities began to gain national attention.

At Serra High School, Lee played alongside Robert Woods and, as a senior, recorded 57 receptions for 1,409 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also contributed defensively and earned selection for the Under Armour All-America Game. Lee was named Cal-Hi Sports State Athlete of the Year and competed in track and field, qualifying for the NCAA championships in the long jump with a personal best of 7.76 meters.

Lee attended the University of Southern California, where he quickly became a standout wide receiver. As a freshman, he secured a starting position and finished the season with 73 receptions for 1,143 yards and 11 touchdowns. Lee set a Pac-12 Conference record for receiving yards in a game with 16 receptions for 345 yards and two touchdowns against Arizona. He concluded his sophomore season with 118 catches for 1,721 yards and 14 touchdowns, earning Pac-12 Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors. Lee won the Fred Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top wide receiver and was recognized as a unanimous All-American. Over three seasons with the Trojans, he totaled 248 receptions for 3,655 yards and 29 touchdowns.

The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Lee in the second round of the NFL Draft. Injuries impacted his professional career, but he played in 30 games over two seasons, amassing 1,553 receiving yards. Lee signed a four-year contract extension with the Jaguars but suffered a knee injury that required season-ending surgery. Additional injuries limited his playing time, and after his tenure with the Jaguars, he signed with the New England Patriots but did not appear in a regular-season game. Lee concluded his NFL career with 59 games played, 174 receptions, and 2,184 receiving yards.

After retiring from professional football, Lee returned to USC to complete his sociology degree. He has participated in speaking engagements focused on athlete retirement and the transition to life after football, addressing topics such as identity and purpose beyond sports. Lee has also expressed interest in coaching and player development roles at the collegiate level, using his experiences to support the next generation of athletes. His background in overcoming adversity and his achievements in college football and the NFL position him as a knowledgeable voice on perseverance, athlete development, and life after professional sports.
