Mark Freuder Knopfler is a British singer, guitarist, and songwriter known for his distinctive blend of country, blues, rock, and folk. Born in Glasgow in 1949, he grew up in Northumberland and played in several bands in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1977, he founded the highly successful band Dire Straits, where he played lead guitar and sang. Knopfler's songwriting and guitar work were key to the band's international success.
