Mark Granovetter is a sociologist recognized for his influential contributions to the study of social networks and economic sociology. Granovetter published the paper "The Strength of Weak Ties" in the American Journal of Sociology, introducing a theory that reshaped the understanding of social networks and human connections. The paper theorized that weak ties—casual acquaintances, friends-of-friends, and other arm's-length relationships—play a critical role in disseminating new information and providing job opportunities, often more so than strong ties such as close friends, family, or immediate coworkers. In a survey of how 282 men in the United States obtained employment, Granovetter found that weak ties were more helpful than strong ones in securing jobs. The paper, initially rejected, later became a widely cited work in social science.
"The Strength of Weak Ties" is among the most cited articles in social science, with tens of thousands of citations. Data from the Web of Science indicate that Granovetter has authored both the first and third most cited sociology articles. Another landmark work, "Economic Action and Social Structure: The Problem of Embeddedness," launched the field of new economic sociology by introducing the concept of embeddedness—the idea that economic relations are rooted in actual social networks rather than existing in an abstract market. Together, these works established Granovetter as a foundational thinker at the intersection of sociology and economics.
Granovetter is also known for the book "Getting a Job: A Study of Contacts and Careers," and has published extensively on social networks, social theory, collective action, and economic sociology. The book "Society and Economy: Framework and Principles" offers a theoretical treatment of the role of social networks, norms, culture, trust, power, and social institutions in the economy. This framework has been applied to topics such as corruption, corporate governance, organizational form, and the emergence of new industries, including the American electricity and high-tech industries.
Granovetter joined Stanford University, where he has served as the Joan Butler Ford Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences and chaired the Department of Sociology. He holds honorary doctorates from Stockholm University and Sciences Po in Paris, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Academy of Political and Social Science, and the National Academy of Sciences. Granovetter has been named a Citation Laureate by Thomson Reuters and has received the BBVA Foundation Frontiers in Knowledge Award in the Social Sciences. His work spans labor markets, collective behavior, and the social foundations of economic life, offering insight into how the architecture of human relationships shapes society.
