Mark Chen

Mark Chen is the chief research officer at OpenAI, where he leads the company's research initiatives focused on advancing artificial intelligence capabilities and ensuring the safe integration of AI technologies into products. As one of OpenAI's two heads of research alongside chief scientist Jakub Pachocki, Chen shares responsibility for maintaining OpenAI's position in the competitive AI landscape, including against rivals such as Google. In his role, Chen integrates research and product development, enabling efficient translation of research into practical AI applications.

Before joining OpenAI, Chen worked as a quantitative trader at Jane Street Capital, developing machine-learning models for futures trading. He transitioned to OpenAI after earning a bachelor's degree in mathematics with computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Chen's technical contributions at OpenAI have influenced the development of modern AI models. He led a team that adapted transformer architecture for visual data, enabling models to process images as sequences of tokens. This approach was first implemented in "ImageGPT" and later in the "DALL-E" series. Chen also contributed to adding image recognition capabilities to "GPT-4" and led the development of "Codex," the generative coding model behind GitHub Copilot. His ongoing work focuses on enhancing AI models' reasoning abilities, including the chain of thought approach demonstrated in the "o1" model.

Chen has been recognized by MIT Technology Review's Innovators Under 35 list and featured on Gold House's A100 list. He also serves as a coach for the USA International Olympiad in Informatics Team. Under his guidance, OpenAI's models have achieved notable results in international competitions, including a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad and second place in the AtCoder World Tour Finals. In addition to his research leadership, Chen works on product safety, aiming to ensure that AI systems reliably fulfill user intent.
