Mark A. Calabria

Mark A. Calabria, Ph.D., is a board member at Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB). The PCAOB oversees the audits of public companies and SEC-registered brokers and dealers. The PCAOB is a nonprofit corporation established by Congress to oversee the audits of public companies in order to protect investors and further the public interest in the preparation of informative, accurate, and independent audit reports. The PCAOB also oversees the audits of brokers and dealers registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), including compliance reports filed pursuant to federal securities laws.

Calabria is the former Chief Statistician of the United States. The Chief Statistician of the U.S. is based in the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), provides coordination, oversight, and guidance for the federal statistical system, ensuring the quality, objectivity, and confidentiality of data produced by over 100 agencies. The office establishes government-wide statistical policies, approves data collections, and promotes evidence-based policy.

He is the former Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), which regulates Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the Federal Home Loan Banks. During his tenure, he led FHFA’s response to COVID-19, establishing programs that helped millions of families remain in their homes, and revitalized the agency as a prudential regulator by creating new Research, Accounting Policy and Resolution Divisions.

Prior to FHFA, Dr. Calabria served as Chief Economist to Vice President Mike Pence, advising on taxes, trade, labor, financial services, manufacturing and broader economic policy. He played a key role in enacting the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, and represented the Vice President in the U.S.-Japan Economic Dialogue and the White House Ocean Policy Committee.

Dr. Calabria was previously Director of Financial Regulation at the Cato Institute, where he co-founded the Center for Monetary and Financial Alternatives and helped establish Cato as a leading voice in mortgage finance, capital regulation, cryptocurrencies and consumer protection. He also served as senior aide to the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, where he was a principal drafter of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008, and led legislative responses to Hurricane Katrina and flood insurance reform.
