Marie-Louise Eta

Marie-Louise Eta is a German football coach recognized for her contributions to both women's and men's professional soccer. As a player, Eta—then known by her maiden name Bagehorn—had a successful career with Turbine Potsdam, winning three Frauen-Bundesliga titles and the UEFA Women's Champions League. She also represented Germany at various youth national team levels, from Under-15 to Under-23, and was part of squads that won the UEFA Women's Under-17 European Championship and the FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup. Recurring injuries led to her retirement from playing at age 26.

Eta transitioned into coaching and completed her UEFA Pro Licence, the highest coaching qualification in football. She managed the Germany Under-19 women's team before moving into men's football. Eta became the first woman to serve as assistant coach for a men's Bundesliga side and a team in the men's UEFA Champions League when she joined Union Berlin's coaching staff. She later became the first woman to take charge of a men's team in a Bundesliga match, temporarily replacing Union Berlin's head coach during a suspension.

Eta was subsequently appointed interim head coach of Union Berlin, marking the first time a woman managed a team in the Bundesliga and in any of the top five European football leagues. She has also worked as the Union Berlin Under-19 men's coach, with her appointment to the senior role regarded as a significant milestone in professional soccer. Eta's leadership in men's football drew international attention and support from figures across the sport, though it also prompted some negative reactions. Throughout, Eta has emphasized that coaching appointments should be based on performance rather than gender.

Eta has expressed hope that her achievements will inspire young girls and open new opportunities within football. She has also been named head coach of Union Berlin's women's team.
