Margaret A. Hamburg

Dr. Margaret Hamburg is a globally recognized leader in public health, medicine and science, currently serving as co-president of the InterAcademy Partnership and chair of the Commonwealth Fund Commission on a National Public Health System. She also chairs the advisory group for NTI | bio and holds positions with the World Dementia Council and the GAVI vaccine alliance. A former Foreign Secretary of the National Academy of Medicine, she continues to represent the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine on the steering committee of the InterAcademy Partnership for Science, Health and Policy. She is also past chair and president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest scientific membership organization.

Dr. Hamburg previously served as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, advancing regulatory science, medical product innovation, and global engagement while overseeing landmark laws to curb tobacco use and enhance food safety. She was vice president and senior scientist at the Nuclear Threat Initiative and New York City Health Commissioner, where she launched initiatives to reduce infant mortality, combat HIV/AIDS, address tuberculosis, and implement the nation’s first public health bioterrorism preparedness program. She also served as Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and as Assistant Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Hamburg serves on numerous boards and advisory committees, including the Council on Foreign Relations, GAVI, the Nature Conservancy, Ending Pandemics (chair), the Lasker Foundation, the American Museum of Natural History, the Commonwealth Fund, the Urban Institute, Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness and Innovation (CEPI). She is a member of the Harvard University Global Advisory Council, the Gates Foundation Global Health Scientific Advisory Committee, the Harvard Medical School Board of Fellows, and the World Dementia Council, and participates in the Committee on International Security and Arms Control (CISAC) at the National Academy of Sciences and the CSIS Commission on Strengthening America’s Health Security.
