Marc Trestman is a football coach and offensive strategist whose career spans more than four decades across the NFL, Canadian Football League, and collegiate football. After his playing career ended, Trestman began coaching as a volunteer assistant for the University of Miami Hurricanes while attending law school, later becoming the school's quarterbacks coach. He earned a J.D. at the University of Miami School of Law, where he also contributed to Miami's first national championship. Trestman has been a member of the Florida Bar since 1982.
A former NFL head coach and offensive coordinator, Trestman spent 25 years in the NFL coaching quarterbacks and leading offenses for teams including the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens, and Cleveland Browns. As offensive coordinator of the Raiders, he helped lead the team to Super Bowl XXXVII, with the Raiders leading the NFL in total offense and passing, and quarterback Rich Gannon winning the MVP Award. He also served as offensive coordinator for the 49ers, where the team led the NFL in scoring and passing yards. As an NFL assistant, Trestman helped five different teams reach the playoffs in his first year on the job: the Browns, 49ers, Lions, Cardinals, and Raiders.
Trestman is also known for his success in the Canadian Football League, where as head coach of the Montreal Alouettes he led the team to three consecutive Grey Cup appearances and back-to-back championships. In five years as head coach of the Alouettes, he compiled a 59-31 regular season record, made the playoffs every year, and appeared in three Grey Cups. Trestman was named CFL Coach of the Year and helped quarterback Anthony Calvillo earn back-to-back league MVP honors. He later served as head coach of the Toronto Argonauts, winning the Grey Cup and earning a second CFL Coach of the Year Award.
The Chicago Bears named Trestman their fourteenth head coach in team history. In his first year, the Bears offense set franchise records in net yards, gross passing yards, completion percentage, passing touchdowns, passer rating, and first downs. Trestman later joined Jim Harbaugh's staff with the Los Angeles Chargers as a senior offensive assistant.
Beyond coaching, Trestman is an adjunct professor at the University of Miami School of Law, where he teaches leadership, and is the author of "Perseverance: Life Lessons on Leadership and Teamwork" and "Teaching the Game." Recognized for his expertise in quarterback development, offensive innovation, and leadership, Trestman brings a combination of legal training, championship experience, and decades of mentoring athletes to his work in football and education.
