Mara Brock Akil

Mara Brock Akil has carved out an impressive career in the American television industry. At age 30, she became the youngest African American showrunner on broadcast network television, a feat she achieved with the sitcom "Girlfriends". Brock Akil continued to blaze trails, creating "Being Mary Jane," BET's first drama series, and co-creating the romantic drama "Love Is" on OWN. As an executive producer, she also played a significant role in the DC Arrowverse series "Black Lightning" on The CW. Her prowess extends beyond the small screen, with her screenplay for the film "Sparkle" earning a nomination for Outstanding Screenplay at the Black Reel Awards.

Adding to her portfolio, Brock Akil founded Akil Productions in 2000 and Story27 with Netflix in 2021, further solidifying her foothold in the industry. On top of these, her documentary "Stamped from the Beginning" was nominated for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking at the Primetime Emmy Awards, further showcasing her diverse talents.
