Manny Malhotra

Manny Malhotra is a figure in professional hockey whose career spans nearly three decades, transitioning from NHL player to head coach. Malhotra was drafted in the first round as the seventh overall pick of the NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers, making the immediate jump from junior hockey to the NHL at age 18 and becoming the second player of Indian heritage to play in the league. Over his career, he accumulated 295 points—116 goals and 179 assists—in 991 regular-season games with the New York Rangers, Dallas Stars, Columbus Blue Jackets, San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks, Carolina Hurricanes, and Montreal Canadiens.

Known as a two-way forward and for his faceoff proficiency, Malhotra won over 56 percent of faceoffs he took in the NHL, earning recognition as one of the league's top faceoff specialists—a skill developed through meticulous study before the widespread use of advanced data analytics in hockey.

Malhotra's tenure with the Vancouver Canucks is notable for both significant achievements and challenges. He played a key role in the club's run to the Stanley Cup Final, contributing expertise on faceoffs, penalty-killing, and leadership. During a game against the Colorado Avalanche, Malhotra sustained an eye injury from a deflected puck, resulting in surgery and partial vision loss, which forced him to miss most of the team's playoff run. His return for the Stanley Cup Finals after the injury remains a significant moment in Canucks history. Near the end of a subsequent campaign, Malhotra was nominated for the Bill Masterton Trophy, an NHL award for perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. After his time with Vancouver, Malhotra joined the Carolina Hurricanes following a tryout with their AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers, eventually earning a professional contract with Carolina.

After retiring from playing, Malhotra began his coaching career as a development coach for Vancouver before being named an assistant coach. He later spent four seasons as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs, where the team's power play ranked among the top in the NHL. Malhotra was hired to coach AHL Abbotsford, guiding the team to its first Calder Cup championship. Even when injuries affected Abbotsford's subsequent season, Vancouver management noted Malhotra's ability to maintain standards and continue player development.

Malhotra was named head coach of the Vancouver Canucks, succeeding Adam Foote. He is believed to be the first NHL head coach of South Asian descent, a milestone recognized within the hockey community. Malhotra's presence as both a player and coach in a sport that has historically lacked diversity serves as a blueprint for players of color and demonstrates the importance of representation in professional hockey.
