Makoto Fujimura is a Japanese American painter, author, and cultural advocate recognized for his contributions to contemporary art. Fujimura is known for his process-driven, refractive approach to "slow art," a method that emphasizes patience and contemplation. He became the first non-Japanese artist invited into the doctorate-level lineage program of Nihonga at Tokyo University of the Arts, where he studied alongside artists such as Takashi Murakami and Hiroshi Senju. His bicultural arts education influenced his unique fusion of contemplative art and expressionism, utilizing traditional Nihonga materials such as mineral pigments and handmade paper.
Nihonga, the traditional Japanese painting technique Fujimura practices, involves layering pigments like azurite, malachite, and gold onto handmade paper, creating works that reflect both fragility and endurance. As an advocate of "slow art," Fujimura emphasizes the importance of both the creation and appreciation of art as deliberate, immersive processes. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide and is included in collections such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, the Huntington Library, and the Tikotin Museum in Israel.
Fujimura was commissioned by Crossway Publishing for "The Four Holy Gospels" project, commemorating the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible. He is among the first artists to paint live on stage at Carnegie Hall, collaborating with composer and percussionist Susie Ibarra. His exhibition "A Gaze Traverses Time and Space: Dialogue between Makoto Fujimura and Chinese Ancient Porcelain" at C3M Museum on the Bund in Shanghai featured his paintings alongside Chinese imperial porcelain.
Appointed to the National Council on the Arts, Fujimura has served as an international advocate for the arts, advising on governmental arts policies. He founded the International Arts Movement, now IAMCultureCare, which oversees the Fujimura Institute. Fujimura introduced the concepts of "Culture Care" and "Theology of Making," which have influenced artists and cultural thinkers. The American Academy of Religion recognized him with its Religion and the Arts Award for his contributions to the intersection of art and religion.
Fujimura is the author of books including "Art+Faith: A Theology of Making," "Silence and Beauty," "Refractions," "Culture Care," and "Art Is: A Journey Into the Light," published by Yale University Press. His works have received awards such as the Aldersgate Prize for "Silence and Beauty." Fujimura's commencement addresses have been recognized by NPR as among the best ever delivered. He has lectured at conferences, universities, and museums, including the Aspen Institute, Yale, Princeton, and Oxford. Through his art, writing, and advocacy, Fujimura encourages audiences to engage deeply with the transformative power of beauty in the visual arts and culture.
