Mac McAnally

Mac McAnally is recognized as one of country music's most versatile figures, serving as a singer-songwriter, session guitarist, producer, and performer with a significant impact on the genre's enduring recordings. McAnally has spent nearly five decades contributing to the sound of country music, earning a reputation in Nashville for his songwriting, musicianship, and production skills.

A skilled guitarist and pianist, McAnally began performing in clubs at age 13, wrote his first song at 15, and became a Muscle Shoals studio musician at 18. His initial session work took place at Wishbone in Muscle Shoals, where he recorded his first four solo albums and played on sessions for other artists at FAME and Muscle Shoals Sound studios. His debut single, "It's a Crazy World," reached number 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. During his time in Muscle Shoals, McAnally collaborated with producers George Martin, Jerry Wexler, and Rick Hall, contributing to recordings across soul, rock, gospel, and country, including Hank Williams Jr.'s "Family Tradition."

As a songwriter, McAnally has written several notable country music hits. His number-one songs include "Old Flame" by Alabama and "Down the Road" by Kenny Chesney, a duet with McAnally. His compositions have been recorded by Reba McEntire, Ricky Van Shelton, Charley Pride, Randy Travis, and others. As a session musician, McAnally has worked with Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Amy Grant, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Jimmy Buffett. His musicianship is featured on albums by Country Music Hall of Fame inductees Toby Keith, Dolly Parton, Keith Whitley, and George Strait. McAnally has released 10 studio albums, with "Once in a Lifetime" highlighting his guitar-driven style.

McAnally was a longtime collaborator with Jimmy Buffett, serving as guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, producer, and musical director. He was a member of Buffett's backing group, the Coral Reefer Band, and has led the band following Buffett's death. McAnally has continued to perform with the Coral Reefers on tour, including appearances with The Doobie Brothers, and has produced projects for artists such as Amy Grant.

McAnally has received multiple honors, including 10 CMA Musician of the Year Awards, surpassing Chet Atkins for the most wins in the category. He is a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame, and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. McAnally received the ACM Poet's Award at the ACM Honors, recognizing his longstanding contributions as a country music songwriter. After recovering from a heart attack, McAnally returned to the stage, continuing his career as a musician who has influenced American music both behind the scenes and on stage.
