Ma Yansong

Ma Yansong is an architect known for his innovative approach to urban design and contemporary architecture. After studying architecture at Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture and earning a Master of Architecture from Yale University, Ma worked with Zaha Hadid and Peter Eisenman in experimental design environments. He founded MAD Architects in Beijing, later expanding to offices in Los Angeles and other cities. Ma's work focuses on futuristic, organic, and technologically advanced designs that reinterpret Eastern philosophies of nature and address the spiritual and emotional needs of urban residents.

Central to Ma's practice is the concept of Shanshui City, which serves as MAD's core design philosophy. This approach is evident in projects featuring soft curves, integrated public spaces, and gardens, drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese paintings and Eastern aesthetics. Ma leads design efforts across a range of scales, including urban planning, mixed-use developments, municipal buildings, museums, theaters, concert halls, and residential projects. Notable works include "Harbin Opera House," "Absolute Towers" in Mississauga, "Chaoyang Park Plaza" in Beijing, and "Quzhou Sports Park" in Zhejiang, all recognized for blending architecture with the natural landscape.

Ma was commissioned as chief architect for the "Lucas Museum of Narrative Art" in the United States, becoming the first Chinese architect to design a major overseas cultural landmark. He curated the China Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale and oversaw MAD's first built cultural project in Europe, the "Fenix Museum of Migration" in Rotterdam. These projects highlight Ma's influence in international architecture and urban design.

Ma's achievements include receiving a RIBA International Fellowship, the Young Architects Award from the Architectural League of New York, and recognition by Fast Company as one of the "10 Most Creative People in Architecture." He was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and selected for the TIME 100 list of influential people. Ma's work has been acknowledged by the Dezeen Awards jury for its impact on global architecture.

In addition to his design practice, Ma is active in architectural education and public discourse. He has served as an adjunct professor at Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Tsinghua University, and the University of Southern California, and as the Eero Saarinen Visiting Professor of Architectural Design at Yale University. Ma explores the cultural value of cities and architecture through exhibitions, publications, and public lectures, contributing to ongoing discussions about the relationship between architecture, nature, and urban environments.
