Léon Marchand

Léon Marchand is a French competitive swimmer specializing in individual medley, breaststroke, and butterfly events. Marchand first gained international attention at the World Junior Championships, where he earned a bronze medal in the 400-meter individual medley. His career advanced when he contacted coach Bob Bowman and joined Arizona State University, becoming one of the most decorated NCAA swimmers. During his three years with the Sun Devils, Marchand won 10 NCAA titles, 17 Pac-12 titles, broke multiple collegiate records, and contributed to Arizona State's first NCAA team championship.

Marchand achieved global recognition at the World Aquatics Championships, winning gold in the 400-meter individual medley and 200-meter butterfly. He later won three individual gold medals in Fukuoka, Japan, and broke Michael Phelps' longstanding world record in the 400-meter individual medley. Marchand was named best male swimmer at the World Aquatics gala and entered the Paris Olympic Games as a leading contender.

At the Paris Olympics, Marchand won four individual gold medals in the 400-meter individual medley, 200-meter butterfly, 200-meter breaststroke, and 200-meter individual medley, setting four Olympic records. He became the most decorated French swimmer in a single Olympic Games and achieved two individual gold medals in a single night, a feat last accomplished in 1976.
