Luis Garicano

Luis Garicano is a Spanish economist whose career includes roles at academic institutions, international policy organizations, and European governance bodies. Garicano began his academic career at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, where he attained the rank of full professor in economics and strategy. He later joined the London School of Economics as a full professor in economics and strategy and served as head of the Managerial Economics and Strategy Group. Garicano holds a master's in European economic studies from the College of Europe in Belgium and a doctorate in economics from the University of Chicago. His thesis supervisor at Chicago was Sherwin Rosen, and he served as teaching assistant to Gary Becker and Kevin M. Murphy.

Garicano's academic work focuses on the future of work and organizations, the relationship between technology and inequality, and economic growth and productivity. His research has been published in the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Economic Literature, and Journal of Economic Perspectives. He received the Banco Herrero prize for best economist in Spain under 40 years old. Garicano has contributed as a columnist to international and Spanish media, including Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, El País, and El Mundo. He is the author of books including "El dilema de España" and, with Toni Roldán, "Recuperar el futuro."

Garicano served as a Member of the European Parliament, where he was vice president of the Renew Europe Group in charge of economic affairs and a vice president of the European political party Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe. He co-drafted legislation for the European Recovery and Reconstruction Fund and the initial legislation on the Carbon Adjustment Mechanism. Garicano led efforts on Russian sanctions and aid to Ukraine and was a member of the group of economists that originated the European Safe Bonds proposal, which was passed by the European Parliament.

Garicano returned to the London School of Economics as a full professor at the School of Public Policy. He is also a CEPR fellow and a senior non-resident fellow at Bruegel. In addition to his tenured posts, Garicano has been a visiting professor at institutions including MIT, Columbia Business School, and London Business School. His work addresses the economics of the digital age, organizational change, and European economic governance.
