Lucy Dacus is a singer-songwriter and producer known for her literary approach to indie rock. Dacus gained initial recognition with her debut album, "No Burden," released through EggHunt Records in Richmond. Following a competitive label interest, she signed with Matador Records, which re-released the album to critical acclaim. Dacus has performed at Lollapalooza, made her national television debut on CBS This Morning, and recorded a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR.
Dacus further established her presence in the indie music scene with her second album, "Historian," which features the extended breakup anthem "Night Shift." The album received positive reviews from outlets including Rolling Stone and NME, and was named among the best albums of the year by NPR and Rolling Stone. Her third studio album, "Home Video," continued her exploration of introspective, narrative songwriting, focusing on themes such as adolescence, friendship, religion, and first love. Dacus performed the single "Hot & Heavy" on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Rolling Stone recognized her as one of the top guitarists of all time, highlighting the importance of her guitar work alongside her vocals.
In addition to her solo career, Dacus is a member of boygenius, a supergroup formed with Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker. The trio wrote, recorded, and self-produced their debut "boygenius" EP in four days. Their debut studio album, "The Record," received high praise from publications such as DIY, NME, and Rolling Stone, achieved chart success in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, and reached number four on the Billboard 200. The album earned boygenius seven Grammy nominations and three wins, including Best Alternative Music Album, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Performance, making the group the first all-female band to win the latter two categories. Boygenius has appeared as musical guests on Saturday Night Live and headlined major festivals including Coachella.
Dacus is also known for her advocacy, supporting causes such as abortion funds and trans rights, and participating in broader social justice movements. Her music is recognized for its honest and nuanced songwriting, and she has addressed the limitations of the "sad girl" label in interviews. Her fourth solo album, "Forever Is a Feeling," released on Geffen Records, features collaborations with Hozier, Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Bartees Strange, and presents a more hopeful, romantic sound while maintaining her poetic style. An expanded edition, "Forever Is a Feeling: The Archives," includes live tracks, demos, and new songs. Dacus continues to be a prominent figure in indie rock, performing both as a solo artist and as part of boygenius.
