Lucy Anne Hurston

Lucy Anne Hurston is a sociologist, biographer, ethnographer, and professor whose work bridges academic research and literary heritage. A professor emeritus of sociology at Manchester Community College in Manchester, Connecticut, Hurston has developed a career focused on the study of social behavior, race, and culture. She earned her associate degree from Manchester Community College, a bachelor's degree in sociology from Central Connecticut State University, and a master's in sociology from The Ohio State University.

Hurston, the niece of Harlem Renaissance writer Zora Neale Hurston, is the author of "Speak, So You Can Speak Again: The Life of Zora Neale Hurston." Although she was only three years old when her aunt died, Hurston has compiled extensive knowledge of Zora Neale Hurston's life and work. "Speak, So You Can Speak Again" is a retrospective produced by Hurston and the estate of Zora Neale Hurston. Presented in an interactive, scrapbook format, the book traces the author's life from her birth through her involvement in the Harlem Renaissance and her work as a collector of Southern folklore. The book features replicated pages from Zora Neale Hurston's personal notes, letters, and other materials, providing insight into her life and mind.

Hurston's academic research includes fieldwork in Jamaica and St. Kitts, offering a perspective connected to her aunt's experiences. She has taught at Manchester Community College for more than 20 years, covering topics such as sociology, social inequality, and contemporary social issues. Hurston has also produced and hosted two documentaries about her aunt and directed the first high school production of the play "Mule Bone."

As owner of Hurston Research LLC, Hurston has contributed to the exploration and dissemination of Zora Neale Hurston's legacy through research. She is a social scientist dedicated to examining social behavior within and between groups, with research focused on race, ethnicity, and culture. Hurston addresses these issues in various forums, exploring and describing social problems and their solutions.

In her lectures, Hurston uses her aunt's work to connect historical and contemporary movements concerning racial inequality and discrimination in American society. She serves as advisory board chair of the Hurston/Wright Foundation, supporting African American literary heritage. Hurston has donated first-edition, signed copies of her aunt's books to university library collections, helping to preserve Zora Neale Hurston's legacy.

A keynote speaker and public intellectual, Hurston has delivered addresses at universities, libraries, and community institutions nationwide. Her lectures have been featured at institutions such as Rutgers University, the University of Hartford, and California State University Long Beach.
