Lucía Velasco

Lucía Velasco is a distinguished economist known for her expertise on the social impact of technology and author of the book "¿Te va a sustituir un algoritmo?" ("Will an Algorithm Replace You?"). She currently works with the United Nations and serves as Co-Chair of the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI). A researcher at Maastricht University, Velasco focuses on developing technology policies that promote social equity. Her career has also included high-level roles at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the World Economic Forum.

Velasco previously served as Director General of the National Observatory on Technology and Society in Spain, where she guided digital policy and innovation strategies. Her international experience includes consultancy work on climate change, social responsibility, and corporate governance. Before joining the Spanish government in 2018, she led social innovation initiatives at an NGO, co-designing projects with youth at risk of exclusion.

She is currently a Policy Fellow at the School of Transnational Governance at the European University Institute (EUI) and contributes as an independent expert to the European Commission and the OECD. In addition, Velasco is a regular media columnist, known for sparking thoughtful public discourse on the intersection of technology and society.
