Loverboy is a Canadian rock band best known for their energetic anthems, radio-friendly hooks, and red leather stage attire that defined 1980s rock. Formed in Calgary in 1979, the band consists of founding members Mike Reno (lead vocals), Paul Dean (guitar), Doug Johnson (keyboards), and Matt Frenette (drums), with Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve later joining on bass following the death of original bassist Scott Smith in 2000.
Loverboy rose to fame with their 1980 self-titled debut album, which went multi-platinum in Canada and the U.S., driven by hits like “Turn Me Loose” and “The Kid Is Hot Tonite.” Their 1981 follow-up, Get Lucky, became a rock staple, spawning massive hits such as “Working for the Weekend,” “When It’s Over,” and “Lucky Ones.” With catchy choruses and high-energy performances, Loverboy became a fixture on MTV and stadium tours throughout the decade.
Throughout the '80s, Loverboy continued to rack up hit singles and platinum albums, including Keep It Up (1983) and Lovin’ Every Minute of It (1985). Their music—often anthemic, danceable, and drenched in synthesizers—captured the exuberance of the era and earned them multiple Juno Awards and a loyal international fan base.
While their mainstream popularity waned in the 1990s, Loverboy has remained an enduring presence on the classic rock circuit. They’ve released new music periodically, including the album Unfinished Business in 2014, and have continued to tour alongside other legacy acts.
