Liza Long

Liza Long is an educator, writer, and leading voice in the integration of artificial intelligence in education. As an Assistant Professor of English at the College of Western Idaho, she focuses on how generative AI tools are reshaping writing instruction and classroom practice. Her work sits at the intersection of technology and the humanities, with an emphasis on helping students and faculty thoughtfully incorporate AI into processes like drafting, revision, and feedback while maintaining strong critical thinking skills.

A central component of Long’s work is the development of open educational resources, including the widely used Write What Matters materials, which explore the evolving role of AI in writing pedagogy. These resources address both the practical applications of AI and the broader questions it raises around authorship, originality, and academic integrity. She is particularly focused on building “AI literacy,” equipping educators and students with the knowledge to understand how these systems work, where they fall short, and how to use them responsibly and ethically.

In both her teaching and thought leadership, Long advocates for a human-centered approach to AI in education. She encourages treating AI as a collaborative tool rather than a replacement for human effort, emphasizing transparency, critical evaluation, and iterative learning. Through classroom innovation and public speaking, she continues to shape how institutions adopt AI—balancing experimentation with a commitment to preserving creativity, intellectual ownership, and meaningful learning experiences.

Long holds a B.A. in Classics from Brigham Young University; an M.A. in Classics from the University of California, Los Angeles; and an Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership from Argosy University. Her dissertation research focused on mental health advocacy and leadership strengths.
