Lip-Bu Tan

Lip-Bu Tan is a technology executive, venture capitalist, and leader in the semiconductor industry who serves as chief executive officer of Intel Corporation. Tan has more than two decades of experience in semiconductors and software, with established relationships across the technology ecosystem. He holds a Bachelor of Science in physics from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, a Master of Science in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an MBA from the University of San Francisco. He has also received an honorary doctorate in science and technology from Carnegie Mellon University.

Before joining Intel, Tan founded the venture capital firm Walden International, which grew from $3 million at its inception to $5 billion by focusing investments in Asian technology startups. Tan has concentrated on global technology investments in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and software, contributing to the creation of more than 300 American companies, approximately 50,000 American jobs, and $400 billion in American market capitalization. Relationship Science named Tan to its Most Connected Executives in the Technology Industry list with a perfect power score of 100.

Tan's operational leadership was demonstrated during his tenure at Cadence Design Systems, where he served as CEO, leading a transformation of the company with a focus on customer-centric innovation. Under his leadership, Cadence more than doubled its revenue, expanded operating margins, and saw significant stock price appreciation. Tan served on the Cadence board of directors for 19 years, including as executive chairman following his time as CEO.

Tan was named CEO of Intel, and following his appointment, Intel shares experienced a notable increase, reflecting investor optimism. Intel Chairman Frank Yeary described Tan as a leader with technology industry expertise, deep relationships across product and foundry ecosystems, and a proven track record of creating shareholder value. In communications to Intel employees, Tan has emphasized a focus on engineering-driven operations and customer-centric product development. Tan's industry contributions have been recognized with several honors, including the Robert N. Noyce Award from the Semiconductor Industry Association and inclusion in Forbes' Top 50 Venture Capitalists. He has also received the Phil Kaufman Award for leadership and impact on the Electronic System Design industry. Tan and Cadence Design Systems endowed two computer science professorships at Carnegie Mellon University, and he donated to Nanyang Technological University to establish a professorship in artificial intelligence, supporting research and education at NTU's College of Computing and Data Science. With a career spanning engineering, venture capital, and executive leadership in the semiconductor sector, Tan brings technical expertise, investment experience, and transformational leadership to Intel.
