Lilly Wachowski

Lilly Wachowski is transgender film director, writer, and producer known for her contributions to science fiction, action, and LGBTQ representation in cinema and television.

Before entering the film industry, Wachowski and her sister Lana wrote comic books for Marvel Comics' Razorline imprint, including issues of Clive Barker's "Ectokid," as well as contributing to "Clive Barker's Hellraiser" and "Clive Barker's Nightbreed" for Epic Comics. The sisters transitioned to screenwriting, co-authoring the script for the action thriller "Assassins," and made their directorial debut with the neo-noir film "Bound," which received the International Fantasy Film Award for Best Film and a Grand Jury Award Honorable Mention at Sundance.

Wachowski's second feature, "The Matrix," achieved global recognition for its blend of religion, philosophy, martial arts, and science fiction. The film became a major box-office success and a cultural landmark, earning the Saturn Award for Best Director. "The Matrix" has been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. Wachowski and her sister followed with two sequels, "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions," and wrote and produced "V for Vendetta," an adaptation of Alan Moore and David Lloyd's graphic novel. Additional projects include the live-action adaptation "Speed Racer," the multi-narrative epic "Cloud Atlas" (co-directed with Tom Tykwer), and the science fiction adventure "Jupiter Ascending."

In television, Wachowski co-created the Netflix series "Sense8" with Lana Wachowski and J. Michael Straczynski. The series, featuring an international ensemble cast and filmed in multiple cities, won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Drama Series and received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music. Wachowski later served as writer, director, and showrunner on Showtime's "Work in Progress," a comedy-drama centered on queer themes that earned a Gotham Independent Film Award nomination for Breakthrough Series.

After publicly coming out as a transgender woman, Wachowski encouraged audiences to view her work through the lens of trans identity, highlighting recurring themes of identity, self-image, and transformation, particularly in "The Matrix," which has been interpreted as a trans allegory. This perspective has contributed to ongoing discussions about representation in media. Wachowski has continued to develop queer and trans-centered projects, including her solo feature directorial debut "Trash Mountain," as well as planned adaptations of "Manhunt" by Gretchen Felker-Martin, "Confessions of the Fox" by Jordy Rosenberg, and the comic book "Cosmoknights." Wachowski's work continues to influence the film and television industries, particularly in the areas of science fiction, action, and LGBTQ storytelling.
