Lieutenant Commander Chip Lutz

Lieutenant Commander Chip Lutz, USN (Ret.), MSEd, CSP, is a leadership expert and keynote speaker with more than three decades of experience in military and organizational leadership. After joining the Navy, Lutz served for 22 years before retiring. He is the president and founder of Unconventional Leader LLC. During his military career, Lutz completed two command tours and served as director of security for Naval District Washington, DC during the September 11 attacks. As commanding officer of two Naval facilities, his teams received national recognition for setting new standards of service while maintaining high morale and retention among team members.

Lutz’s experience leading through crisis, particularly as director of security responsible for the safety and security of 25,000 people across six Naval installations in the National Capital Region, forms the foundation of his leadership speaking platform. His presentations draw on real-world crisis management, strategic leadership, and team building, resonating with audiences across industries. Lutz emphasizes the importance of relationship-building and practical leadership strategies, focusing on business leadership, corporate culture, generational issues, human resources, teamwork, and work-life balance.

As a professional speaker, Lutz has delivered presentations nationwide to organizations, associations, and military units. His sessions blend substantive leadership content with humor and interactivity, making complex concepts accessible and actionable for diverse audiences.

Lutz serves as adjunct faculty for two universities, teaching courses in leadership, management, human resource development, and organizational behavior. He holds a master’s degree in adult education from Northern Illinois University, a master’s degree in pastoral counseling from Liberty University, and a Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary. Lutz is the author of books including "Chipper The Skipper's Lavatory Leader" and "Get Past The Crap!: Lead Yourself First. Bounce Back. Get SH*T DONE." His work has been published in Security Management Magazine, and his articles on teamwork and leadership have appeared in Zig Ziglar's Weekly Newsletter.

Lutz holds the Certified Speaking Professional designation, conferred by the National Speakers Association, and has served as past president of the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor and the Wisconsin Chapter of the National Speakers Association.
