Laurie Berkner

Laurie Berkner is a pioneering children’s musician, singer, songwriter, and educator often referred to as the “queen of kids’ music.” Known for her dynamic blend of rock-inspired sounds and kid-friendly lyrics, she helped popularize the “kindie rock” genre, which treats young listeners with creativity and respect. Raised in Princeton, New Jersey, Berkner was immersed in music from a young age and studied at Rutgers University, where she toured Europe as a choir soloist and orchestral guitarist. After college, she taught music at daycares and preschools in New York, where she began writing original songs that resonated with children and educators alike.

Berkner released her debut children’s album, Whaddaya Think of That?, in 1997, featuring now-classic songs like “We Are the Dinosaurs.” She later founded her own label, Two Tomatoes Records, and followed up with successful albums including Buzz Buzz and Victor Vito. Her national breakthrough came after an appearance on the "TODAY" show in 2001, leading to high-profile performances at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the White House. Berkner was also the first independent children's artist to top Billboard’s Music Video chart, with her DVD We Are...The Laurie Berkner Band achieving quadruple platinum status.

In addition to her recordings, Berkner has created content across various media platforms. She was a regular on Nick Jr.’s "Jack’s Big Music Show," starred in Sprout’s "Sing It, Laurie!," and released original audio stories through Audible’s Song & Story Kitchen. She has authored several illustrated children’s books based on her songs. Her stage work includes writing music and lyrics for Off-Broadway family musicals like "Wanda’s Monster" and "Interstellar Cinderella."

With more than 15 albums to her name, including Under a Shady Tree, Rocketship Run, and Let’s Go!, Berkner’s music blends acoustic melodies with playful rhythms and lyrics that both children and parents enjoy. She performs nationally with The Laurie Berkner Band, which includes longtime collaborators like Susie Lampert, Winston Roye, and Bob Golden.
