Laura Poitras

Laura Poitras is an Academy Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning documentary filmmaker and journalist recognized for her work on surveillance, civil liberties, and government accountability. Poitras first gained recognition with "Flag Wars," a co-directed documentary about gentrification in Columbus, Ohio, which earned a Peabody Award, won Best Documentary at South by Southwest Film Festival, and was nominated for both an Independent Spirit Award and an Emmy. This early achievement established Poitras as a filmmaker focused on social and political issues, setting the stage for a post-9/11 trilogy that would define her career.

The trilogy—comprising "My Country, My Country," "The Oath," and "Citizenfour"—explores the consequences of the war on terror. "My Country, My Country," about life for Iraqis under U.S. occupation, was nominated for an Academy Award. "The Oath," which examines the experiences of two Yemeni men involved in America's war on terror, won the Excellence in Cinematography Award for U.S. Documentary at Sundance Film Festival. The trilogy culminated in "Citizenfour," a documentary centered on whistleblower Edward Snowden and the exposure of the National Security Agency's surveillance programs targeting private citizens. Accompanied by journalist Glenn Greenwald and The Guardian's Ewen MacAskill, Poitras traveled to Hong Kong to document the first meeting with Snowden.

"Citizenfour" received an Academy Award for Best Documentary, as well as awards from BAFTA, Directors Guild of America, Independent Spirit Awards, Gotham Awards, German Filmpreis, and Cinema Eye Honors. Poitras's journalism exposing the U.S. National Security Agency's global mass surveillance programs was recognized with the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service and the George Polk Award for National Security reporting. Her reporting led to personal risks, including being placed on a secret terrorist watchlist, repeated detentions at the U.S. border, and surveillance by the FBI, which was later confirmed through heavily redacted documents obtained via a lawsuit.

Poitras has continued to innovate in documentary filmmaking and visual arts. Her solo exhibition, "Astro Noise," opened at Whitney Museum of American Art, featuring immersive environments with documentary footage and original documents. Her film "All the Beauty and the Bloodshed" premiered at Venice Film Festival, where it won the Golden Lion and was nominated for an Academy Award, won an Independent Spirit Award, and was named best documentary of the year by New York Film Critics Circle, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and National Society of Film Critics. Poitras also co-directed and produced "Cover-Up," focusing on the journalism of Seymour Hersh, which premiered at Venice International Film Festival and screened at New York Film Festival.

Poitras is a MacDowell Colony Fellow and a MacArthur Fellow. She received the I.F. Stone Medal for Journalistic Independence from Harvard's Nieman Foundation, a Peabody Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and grants from Sundance Institute and Creative Capital. Through her work, Poitras addresses critical issues of democracy, privacy, and power, contributing to ongoing discussions in investigative journalism and documentary film.
