Lance Oppenheim

Lance Oppenheim is a filmmaker, documentarian, and producer known for his work in nonfiction cinema. Oppenheim creates documentaries that blend nonfiction storytelling with cinematic formalism, focusing on individuals who build lives in unconventional environments. His films often highlight overlooked communities and explore themes of belonging and the complexities of American life.

Oppenheim began making films as a teenager, directing short documentaries that received festival recognition and national distribution. While in high school, one of his short documentaries was distributed by PBS. At Harvard, Oppenheim studied under filmmakers Ross McElwee, Robb Moss, and Guy Maddin. During his studies, he became the youngest active contributor to The New York Times Op-Docs and received multiple Vimeo Staff Picks. His films have screened at international film festivals including Sundance, Rotterdam, Tribeca, and True/False, and have been featured at the Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian. He was named one of Filmmaker Magazine's 25 New Faces of Independent Film and was a Sundance Ignite Fellow.

Oppenheim's debut feature, "Some Kind of Heaven," is a portrait of four residents living within The Villages, exploring their search for happiness and meaning. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was the only documentary in the NEXT section, a category for works with innovative storytelling. Produced by Darren Aronofsky and The New York Times, "Some Kind of Heaven" earned Oppenheim a Jury Award for Best International Documentary.

Oppenheim expanded his work with two major projects: "Spermworld," which premiered at the True/False Film Festival and is available on FX, Disney+, and Hulu, and "Ren Faire," a three-part documentary series on HBO that examines a succession crisis at the Texas Renaissance Festival. Both projects received nominations at the Cinema Eye Honors and an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best New Non-Scripted or Documentary Series. In 2026, he directed "Primetime" and co-directed "You Can See Everything."
