Lai Chi-wai

Lai Chi-wai is a Hong Kong rock climber, competition climber, and motivational speaker recognized for his achievements in adaptive sports and mountaineering. Lai is a four-time champion of the Asian Rock Climbing Championships and the first Chinese winner of the X Games in extreme sports. At one point in his career, Lai was ranked eighth in the world in rock climbing. His expertise spans disciplines such as speed climbing and buildering, contributing to his reputation in the climbing community.

Lai's athletic career changed following a motorcycle accident on Tuen Mun Road, which resulted in a spinal fracture and paraplegia. After his recovery, Lai took up wheelchair boxing and continued training with fellow climbers. He later became a rock climbing instructor, utilizing his upper body strength and professional experience to mentor others in the sport.

On the fifth anniversary of his accident, Lai climbed Lion Rock in a wheelchair, becoming the first Chinese athlete nominated for the Laureus World's Best Sporting Moment of the month. The climb received international media coverage and highlighted his role in promoting resilience and determination within the adaptive sports community.

Lai also attempted an urban climb of Nina Tower, ascending more than 250 meters of the skyscraper in a wheelchair during a fundraising event for spinal cord injury patients. The event, organized by Ignite Community Services, which Lai co-founded, raised significant funds for rehabilitation initiatives.

Lai has been recognized with the Ten Outstanding Young Persons in Hong Kong Award for his contributions to public education and advocacy. Through motivational talks and his book, "Climbing Over the High Wall of Life," Lai addresses themes of resilience, optimism, and community support. He has been featured in the video "10 People to Inspire You When You're at Your Worst." Lai Chi-wai continues to share his experiences, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and adaptive sports in overcoming adversity.
