Louise Amanda Harman, known professionally as Lady Sovereign, is a British rapper and songwriter who emerged from the underground grime scene in Wembley, London. Recognized for her distinct delivery and British style, Harman gained attention in the hip-hop and grime music industries with a series of singles that showcased her wit and energetic presence over bass-heavy beats. Growing up on the Chalkhill Estate, she began writing her own raps at age 14, sharing her experiences and stories on a So Solid Crew Internet fan forum.

Harman's professional music career began with a collaboration on the Medasyn-produced single "The Battle," released on Casual Records. This project led to a succession of singles, including "A Little Bit of Shhh!," "9 to 5," and "Ch Ching." Her Internet-only freestyles, such as "Tango" and "Cheeky," also gained popularity within the grime community. Harman appeared on the grime compilation "Run the Road" as both a solo artist and alongside The Streets, and released the "Vertically Challenged" EP on Chocolate Industries. A pivotal moment in her career occurred when she met with Jay-Z, who offered her a contract with Def Jam, making her the first non-American female artist signed to the label.

Her debut studio album, "Public Warning," achieved international recognition. The lead single, "Love Me or Hate Me," became the first song by a British rap artist to reach number one on MTV's TRL and charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart. "Public Warning" received positive reviews for its production and lyrical content, noted for balancing humor and substance.

Harman's second studio album, "Jigsaw," was released independently under Midget Records with EMI distribution. The album reflected her creative autonomy and resilience. She has collaborated with artists such as AdRock from Beastie Boys and producer Dr. Luke, bridging British grime and American hip-hop. Often referred to as the "Queen of Grime," Harman's influence in the UK rap and grime scenes has contributed to the international growth of these genres.
