LaVan Davis

LaVan Davis is an American actor and singer known for his work in gospel music, African-American theater, and television. Davis was an original member of the Ricky Grundy Chorale and performed with the Los Angeles Mass Choir, participating in touring productions that highlighted his abilities in both acting and singing. He portrayed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the stage production Voices, demonstrating a dramatic range that would later be reflected in his screen career.

Davis began his screen acting career with the independent science fiction film "Mindbenders" and appeared in other direct-to-video projects. He made a guest appearance in two episodes of "Everybody Hates Chris" as a preacher before earning supporting roles in several of Tyler Perry's stage-to-screen adaptations. Davis appeared in "Why Did I Get Married?", "Madea Goes to Jail," and "Daddy's Little Girls" before taking on the role of Curtis Payne in "Tyler Perry's House of Payne."

As Curtis Payne, Davis played the head of a large, multi-generational family in the syndicated sitcom "Tyler Perry's House of Payne," recognized as the longest-running series with an African-American cast in television history. The character, a fire department chief, managed family and work responsibilities with a distinctive approach. Davis received NAACP Image Awards for his performance and was nominated in subsequent years.

Davis reprised his role as Curtis Payne for "The Paynes" on Oprah Winfrey Network, following the character and his wife, Ella, played by Cassi Davis, as they navigated retirement in Florida. Davis has continued to portray Curtis Payne on "House of Payne." His career spans gospel music, stage plays, film, and television, establishing him as a multifaceted figure in entertainment whose comedic and dramatic performances have engaged audiences across generations.
