Kristy Kowal

Kristy Kowal is an American swimmer, Olympic medalist, World Champion, and former world record-holder in competitive swimming. At the Sydney Summer Olympics, Kowal represented the United States and won the silver medal in the 200-meter breaststroke, finishing just behind Hungary's Agnes Kovacs. Over her decade-long tenure on the U.S. Swimming National Team, Kowal earned multiple international medals, broke eight American records, and set one world record. She became the first American woman to win gold in the 100-meter breaststroke at the World Championships.

Kowal narrowly missed qualifying for the Olympics at age 17 by seventeen-hundredths of a second, but continued to train and compete at the highest level. She participated in the World Championships, winning gold medals in the medley relay and 100-meter breaststroke, as well as silver medals in the 200-meter and 50-meter breaststroke events. At the Pan Pacific Championships, Kowal secured five medals, including gold in the medley relay.

In collegiate swimming, Kowal was the first woman in Southeastern Conference history to win conference titles in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke four consecutive years. She won eight individual NCAA Championships and was named NCAA Swimmer of the Year twice. Kowal was also the first American woman to swim the 100-yard breaststroke in under one minute. She received the NCAA Woman of the Year Award, recognizing her academic, athletic, and community achievements. In her final World Championships, Kowal was voted captain by her teammates.

Kowal has been inducted into the Pennsylvania Swimming Hall of Fame, National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame, University of Georgia Circle of Honor, and Georgia Aquatic Hall of Fame. After retiring from competition and earning a master's degree in elementary education, Kowal has worked as a teacher, swim coach, and mentor. She developed a parent education and training program, "Parents in the Game," and travels nationally to lead workshops for athlete parents. Kowal is also a franchise partner of Big Blue Swim School, supporting youth swimming development in Pennsylvania. Her career highlights resilience, goal-setting, and perseverance in the world of competitive swimming and athlete development.
